Ketamine and OCD

About OCD

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic anxiety-based condition in which individuals generally experience uncontrollable, reoccurring thoughts (obsessions) that can be temporarily alleviated by performing specific behaviors (compulsions). Obsessive thoughts about cleanliness, injury, or symmetry, and the compulsions that spring from them, are common symptoms. For most individuals struggling with OCD, compensatory behaviors are quite time-consuming and disruptive to daily life.

Ketamine and OCD

In a controlled study of ketamine infusions for patients who suffer from OCD, half of those given ketamine for OCD rather than the placebo reported at least a thirty-five percent decrease in obsessive and compulsive symptoms, and saw results last for a week after the first treatment. The consensus is that ketamine a promising treatment for OCD’s most disruptive symptoms.
